Washington Avenue Press is an independent publishing house built at the intersection of culture, craft, and community. We publish stories with intention; fiction and nonfiction, children’s books and adult titles that are rooted in strong storytelling and professional execution.
We believe powerful stories deserve structure, ownership, and reach. Our work extends beyond the page and into classrooms, bookstores, and communities, where literature becomes conversation and impact.
Our catalog includes children’s chapter books, literary and commercial fiction, memoir, poetry, cultural commentary, and emerging voices across genres. If the story is strong, we build it.
Washington Avenue Press was founded by James A. Freeman, professionally known as Freezy the Barber, an author, educator, speaker, and creative entrepreneur whose work bridges literature and lived experience.
With more than 30 years behind the chair, Freeman has built a reputation not only as a master barber, but as a cultural voice and trusted presence in his community. The barbershop has long been a place where stories are exchanged, perspectives are challenged, and generations connect. That environment shaped his understanding of narrative, discipline, and dialogue.
A stand-up comedian by stage and an active father in the school system, Freeman moves comfortably between the mic, the classroom, and the publishing table. His roots in the South Bronx and his continued community engagement inform a body of work grounded in authenticity, structure, and impact.
He believes stories should do more than entertain. They should challenge, connect, and create conversation. Whether shaping manuscripts, speaking to students, or building platforms for emerging authors, his work centers on voice, ownership, and intention.
Washington Avenue Press reflects that foundation.
Washington Avenue Press exists to publish meaningful work with structure, ownership, and cultural awareness. We are committed to developing strong manuscripts, amplifying authentic voices, and building literature that lives beyond the page.
We believe in independent publishing with standards. We believe in stories that connect across classrooms, communities, and generations. We believe authors deserve both creative control and professional execution.
